MESMERIZING WAE REBO - LABUAN BAJO


Wae Rebo is a small traditional village situated on a high land, in Ruteng, Manggarai Tengah, 7 hours from Labuan Bajo. Since it’s located on the top of mountain, the accessibility from and to the village is quite difficult for some people, but it’s interesting for the explorer or hikers.

We can reach the Wae Rebo Village from the famous destination of eastern Indonesia which is Labuan Bajo. The air connectivity to Labuan Bajo are widely available from some major islands in Indonesia especially, the tourism island of Bali. From Labuan Bajo we need to rent car, and take about 5 – 7 hours drive to Denge Village, a small village before Wae Rebo. From Denge Village we need to hike to the top of the mountain about 3 hours by walk to reach the Wae Rebo Village. A local guide is very important to show us the trekking route, as well as to talk to the locals in Wae Rebo in relation to the welcome ceremony in the village.

The Wae Rebo villagers are very stick to their custom. They live on the of the mountain with full of simplicity, but they are very rich of culture. They are very friendly, welcoming every visitor with smile from heart. They still consistent with their own traditional lifestyle, however the tourism developed rapidly. Now, they already prepare 2 houses specially for the visitors.


If you are visiting this village, you need to stay overnight, and feel the atmosphere. It is very calm, with cold air and nature sound. Don’t forget to wake up early morning to see the sun arise from the back of the mountain, and its light illuminates the mountain slope slowly. Then a view moments letter, the smoke will be out from the top of the houses, since the locals start to cook their breakfast. This moment is the most breath-taking moment, you’ll feel the true happiness and peacefulness. Far from pollution, traffic and many stressful things.

One thing that every tourist need to note is, please help the locals to preserve their culture. Please don’t ask to much. They don’t really need any improvement, since it’s already their way of life from hundred years ago. Let’s keep it’s authenticity, so every generation in the world will know the life of Wae Rebo villagers as they supposed to be.

Don’t forget to bring your own rubbish back, keep the Wae Rebo Village clean and the nature live well.
